BrandRenew
A brand-registration deadline guard for small craft breweries and distilleries that sell in several states.
Idea
A brand-registration deadline guard for small craft breweries and distilleries that sell in several states.
BrandRenew tracks every brand and SKU against every state registration, warns the owner before each renewal lapses, and builds the renewal packet (brands due, fees, cases sold) from a sales CSV. It is priced for a 6-person brewery, not a compliance department.
Market gap
Every state that regulates beer, wine, or spirits wants brands registered, and many want them renewed on their own schedule. Tennessee requires annual renewal by May 31 with case counts and a per-brand tax ($25 beer, $50 wine, $100 spirits). Minnesota registrations run 3 years. New York registrations run 3 years. Federal COLAs never expire, so owners assume registrations do not either.
Missing a renewal is expensive. In Tennessee it triggers an immediate stop order, license suspension, and possible seizure of unregistered product after 30 days. A law firm notes that "each year manufacturers miss the renewal deadline."
Existing options split in two: enterprise suites quoted by sales (ShipCompliant, Avalara Compli) and consultants charging $3,000 to $30,000 for legal and label work. Small producers track this in spreadsheets. The timing is right: craft producers are consolidating into fewer, leaner companies (9,578 craft breweries in 2025, down 2.9%; craft distilleries down 25.6% to 2,282), so survivors cannot afford a missed state.
Total Addressable Market (TAM)
Bottom-up, US craft producers that register brands across states.
- Customers: 9,578 craft breweries (Brewers Association, 2025) + 2,282 craft distilleries (ACSA, Aug 2025) = 11,860.
- Price: $99 per month = $1,188 per year (assumption, set below consultant and enterprise pricing; ShipCompliant third-party estimates start near $2,400 per year for small producers).
- TAM: 11,860 x $1,188 = about $14.1M per year.
- SAM: assumption that 20% sell in 3 or more states and carry real multi-state registration load: 2,372 x $1,188 = about $2.8M per year. The 20% figure is my estimate and should be validated in the first 20 customer interviews.
- SOM: 3% of SAM in year one (about 71 customers) = about $84K ARR.
This is a small niche. It is a viable 1 to 3 person business, and wineries (not counted here) are the obvious expansion.
Monetization strategy
Flat monthly SaaS subscription paid by the owner or compliance-minded operations manager. They keep paying because the product gets more valuable with each added state and brand, and the cost of canceling is a missed deadline with a stop order.
Pricing strategy
- Starter, $49 per month: up to 3 states, 15 brands, email alerts.
- Growth, $99 per month (anchor): up to 12 states, unlimited brands, renewal packet PDFs, CSV import, team seats.
- Distributor-ready, $199 per month: multiple legal entities (contract brewing or multiple permits), priority rule updates.
Rationale: the anchor costs $1,188 per year, about 40% of the low end of a single consultant engagement and less than half of the cheapest quoted enterprise suite. Entry at $49 is a no-meeting decision.
Lead magnet
"Which states need a renewal from me this year?" A free checker: pick your brands and the states you ship to, and get a one-page calendar of renewal deadlines, fees, and data each state asks for. It proves value in two minutes and captures the email for the trial.

Competitors
- Sovos ShipCompliant: enterprise alcohol compliance suite with product registration, quote-only pricing; third-party estimates around $2,400 per year or more for small producers.
- Avalara Compli: alcohol compliance services and software for producers, distributors, and importers; bought by Avalara.
- CraftComply: brand registration and compliance service aimed at craft brewers and distillers.
- Ekos and Ollie: craft beverage ERPs that cover production, inventory, and TTB reporting; Ollie's Ops plan lists at $201 per month.
- Compliance consultants and law firms: per-filing or retainer work, quoted at $3,000 to $30,000 for legal and label compliance.
What competitors offer now
ShipCompliant and Compli cover registrations plus direct-to-consumer shipping and tax, so the price and scope fit a larger producer. Consultants file on your behalf but you pay per task and the tracking lives in their files. Ekos and Ollie automate TTB reports and production, and state brand renewals are not their core feature. I could not verify CraftComply's current pricing or feature depth, so the first customer interviews should test it directly.
What can be done differently to attract customers
Sell the one outcome: no stop order. Use a narrow product at a flat low price instead of a suite. Pull case-sales figures from the CSV exports owners already have (Ekos, Ollie, QuickBooks) so renewal packets take minutes. Distribute through the lead-magnet checker, state brewers guilds and the ProBrewer and ACSA communities, and by partnering with distributor onboarding teams that need clean registration status before taking a brand on.
