ShelfSignal
ShelfSignal continuously scans a Shopify store's product feed for what's keeping it invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI shopping agents, then safely fixes it and shows the merchant exactly which orders came from being found there.
Idea
ShelfSignal keeps a Shopify store visible to AI shopping agents. Small and mid-size DTC brands connect their store, ShelfSignal continuously scans their product feed for the data gaps that make AI agents like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode skip or downgrade a product, safely applies the fixes that are reversible, and shows the merchant which orders actually came from being recommended there.
Market gap
Shopify auto-enrolled eligible US merchants into ChatGPT, Copilot, and Google AI Mode discovery starting March 24, 2026, turning product-feed quality into a live revenue lever almost overnight. Roughly 60 percent of e-commerce catalogs carry the exact defects that get products excluded: missing GTINs, inconsistent attribute naming, and stale inventory states. Merchants are already noticing and troubleshooting this in public on the Shopify community forums, and a handful of tiny Shopify apps have appeared to help, but they are new, thinly reviewed, and in at least one documented case actively broke something else on the store while trying to fix AI visibility. The one credible, well-funded platform in this category, Profound, is priced and sold for large brands with marketing teams and a program budget, explicitly not for solo operators or early-stage companies. Nobody has built the safe, self-serve, Shopify-native version yet, and the window is open right now because the underlying platform behavior (Shopify's default agentic storefront enrollment) only shipped this year.
Total Addressable Market (TAM)
Bottom-up, US-only:
- 3,759,838 live Shopify stores in the United States (demandsage.com, Shopify Statistics 2026).
- Assumption: about 10 percent of live stores are real, ongoing catalog businesses with recurring revenue rather than abandoned or never-launched test stores. This is a conservative filter I am applying, not a cited figure. That is roughly 376,000 stores.
- Subtract the 45,262 US Shopify Plus stores (demandsage.com), the enterprise tier likely already served by Profound or an agency, leaving about 330,000 target stores.
- Blended ACV at the $79/mo Growth tier (the expected anchor plan): $948/year.
- TAM: 330,000 x $948 = approximately $313M.
SAM: assume 15 percent of target stores actively run a Google Shopping or Google Merchant Center feed, a reasonable minority share since free Google product listings are a standard SMB acquisition channel (my own conservative estimate, not a cited figure). That is about 49,500 stores x $948 = approximately $47M.
SOM: capturing 3 percent of SAM self-serve over 2 to 3 years is about 1,485 customers x $948 = approximately $1.4M ARR.
Monetization strategy
Self-serve monthly SaaS subscription, billed through Stripe, tiered by SKU count since larger catalogs need more monitoring and deliver more revenue at stake. Merchants pay to keep their catalog continuously scored and, above the entry tier, to let ShelfSignal apply safe fixes automatically instead of manually. They keep paying because AI shopping traffic is compounding (Shopify's own default enrollment, OpenAI's shift toward in-chat product discovery) and because the AI-referral revenue dashboard gives them an ongoing, visible reason the subscription is working.
Pricing strategy
- Starter, $29/mo: up to 100 SKUs, weekly scans, prioritized fix list, manual fix instructions only.
- Growth, $79/mo (anchor, most popular): up to 1,000 SKUs, daily scans, automatic safe fixes with full rollback, AI-referred order attribution dashboard.
- Scale, $199/mo: up to 10,000 SKUs, multiple stores, priority coverage as new AI shopping surfaces launch, Slack alerts. Entry point is a free, no-login visibility scan. Growth is the anchor: it is the plan that actually removes the merchant's own manual work, positioned against Profound's $2,000 to $5,000+/mo enterprise deployments and against paying an agency by the hour for the same fixes.
Lead magnet
A free, no-signup "AI Shopping Visibility Scan": paste a Shopify store URL, get a 0-100 feed health score across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode readiness in under a minute, with the top 3 fixes named in plain English. No account, no OAuth, immediate proof of the gap.
Social proof that the problem exists
- Shopify Community: "Why your store doesn't show up on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity searches and what to fix": a merchant-started thread from March 23, 2026 where store owners actively debate what is blocking their products from AI search, including disagreement over whether an llms.txt file even helps, showing real, unresolved confusion.
- Shopify Community: "Why Some Shopify Products Don't Appear in AI Shopping Answers": a second, independent forum thread on the same core problem, showing this is a recurring pain, not a one-off complaint.
- VirtueNest GPT Feed reviews, Shopify App Store: real merchants paid for and reviewed an existing feed-fix app; one reports "zero results in terms of AI search visibility" after a month, and another documents the app's robots.txt editor blocking the Google Ads crawler, proof both that merchants will pay for this today and that the current tools are not trustworthy yet.
- Profound pricing page: confirms the one well-funded player in this category prices from $99/mo for a single, limited AI engine up to custom enterprise contracts, with real deployments reported at $2,000 to $5,000+/mo, leaving small merchants with no credible mid-tier option.
- Modern Retail: "Shopify says purchases are coming 'inside ChatGPT' through agentic storefronts": documents Shopify's platform-wide push into agentic storefronts and OpenAI's own pivot toward in-chat product discovery, the structural trigger that makes this urgent now rather than a year ago.
Competitors
- Profound: enterprise Generative Engine Optimization platform tracking brand visibility across 11 AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Amazon Rufus). Reached a $1B valuation on a $96M Series C in February 2026. Built for marketing and PR teams at larger brands, sales-led above the entry tier.
- VirtueNest GPT Feed (Shopify App Store): small self-serve app that submits and edits product feed data for ChatGPT and Gemini visibility. Real but early: mixed reviews, a robots.txt bug that blocked Google Ads crawling, and at least one merchant reporting no measurable visibility improvement.
- "All in 1: AI Visibility + SEO" / ChatGPT AEO: Boost Visibility (Shopify App Store): tracks AI-driven traffic and leads with an analytics dashboard. Tiny install base (two reviews at time of research), and focused on measurement, not fixing the underlying feed.
- Google Merchant Center (native, free): flags missing GTINs, category mismatches, and other feed errors, but only for Google's own surfaces (Shopping, AI Mode). Dumps raw technical diagnostics with no plain-English guidance and no coverage of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Amazon Rufus specifically, and does not auto-fix anything.
- Scrunch AI, Otterly.AI: general-purpose GEO monitoring platforms that track brand mentions and citations across AI engines for marketing teams. Not Shopify-native, not built around structured product-feed remediation or order-level revenue attribution.
What competitors offer now
Profound is a dashboard: it tells a brand how often and how favorably it is mentioned across AI engines, which is valuable for a marketing team with a budget and a person to act on it, but it does not touch the merchant's product data and is not priced for a solo operator. The Shopify-native apps go the other direction: cheap and self-serve, but narrow (single-engine feed submission, or traffic analytics only) and, based on their own reviews, not fully reliable yet. Google Merchant Center gives the raw error list for free but expects the merchant to already know what a GTIN mismatch means and how to fix it, and it only ever covers Google's own AI surfaces.
What can be done differently to attract customers
Combine what none of the above do together: continuous, multi-engine feed health scoring in one score instead of a per-platform dashboard; safe, scoped auto-fixes that are logged and one-click reversible, directly answering the trust problem VirtueNest's own reviews surfaced; real AI-referred order attribution tied to actual Shopify sales instead of raw traffic counts; and self-serve pricing from $29/mo instead of Profound's enterprise sales motion. Enter through the free, no-login visibility scan so a merchant sees their own score before ever being asked to connect their store.
